A Gent and His Shoes

Looking dapper and rocking your best pieces wether tailored or not is a choice we all have to make. Either way ,one crucial piece is the shoe you dress with your outfit.

Shoes are the most noticeable  piece in an outfit. The instant impression is made from them and they need to be on point.Today I take a look at a gents’ dress shoes.

What is a dress shoe, you may ask!? The answer to that would be what you are actually wearing on a regular basis. These are considered the standard  daily shoe, they could be on a smart casual or a more formal setup.

However, I am a sucker for classics or traditional pieces if you may and so these dress shoes are certainly narrowed down to four pieces I stick to and so should you. Price dynamics, new designers, ‘current’ trends have been amongst the infusions in fashion which tend to  be showcased on the shelves of stores with various styles and designs of essential items we blindly embrace more so because of their affordable pricing and shoes are not an exception.

Oxfords

The starting point of any shoe collection. It is a timeless piece and a classic staple. Originated from the Oxford University in the 1800s as an alternative that was more current than its previous design. These offer great versatility since they could be dressed up or down; be it tailored pieces or even jeans or khakis.

They are characterised by its minimalist style, a plain toe cap and closed lacing offering a slim hugging silhouette.

Derbies

This is one of the most common dress shoes. The derby was originally used as a hunting and sporting shoe before it made its way into the gentleman’s wardrobe. This is a less formal shoe and most suitable for occasions and events. It is characterized by a single piece of leather that covers the vamp(area between the toe cap and lacing) and an open lacing structure of the shoe.

Monkstraps

I personally lust for these. One of the most in-style shoe currently, its buckle and straps are its unique features. It therefore has no lacing but the straps in its place. These are however a statement piece and when going for this you would consider the fit and length

Brogues

image

This is the most detailed shoe of all the dress shoes. Originating from Ireland where it was used in the wet terrain because of its ability to drain water through its perforations. As an outdoor wear it has certainly found its place as a menswear staple. It  is characterized by its decorative perforations(broguing) and serrated edges. They are of various types or styles depending on the degree of their perforations and similarly the least detailed is a more formal fit(semi-brogues) but these are generally considered a more casual fit.

And so there you go even as you indulge in this menswear world, you now have a rough idea of where to start with. These shoes are the most versatile and would fit in any style you desire.

As you build up your wardrobe, lets begin to collect these staples and make a foundation in our style. Remember ;

That’s it for today guys. Thanks for reading and sorry for the long wait next post coming soon.

Have a dapper week.

Campus Essentials

Chic, In-Style, Fashionable, lets face it,everyone wants to be a dandy. Fact is though that college life kinda limits us in that prospect. This however isn’t an excuse for us to look shoddy, all it means is we should incorporate these actual limits into our very own styles. Today I am sharing with you what i believe are college essentials.

College! A time of our lives, right? Limitations to begin with, the cost factor. Unless you are a Rich Kid of Beverly Hills, we always run on a budget (a tight one). However hope is not lost because this does not compromise our individual style.

Take for example a common piece that we all love and make us belong to the masses: Chuck Taylors (converse all stars) which are way affordable and versatile. Bringing us to the next factor, versatility (you must have seen that coming). This literally means that few pieces in your wardrobe should  bring you glory! This helps keep us in the fashion loop even as we meet regular lads day-in-day-out in class.

This might sound cliché but it stands as a fact ‘simplicity is the utmost sophistication’. It applies in style.Simple items such as tees and denim are a plus.

Durability, what we all bargain for. We tend to need items that are durable enough to stand the constant movements we engage in without ware and tears.

Now on to the chic-iest part, converse all stars or comparable rubbers shoes are a must have for any of you out there. These pieces cut across and more so, they get better with age – what  more could we ask for, just like denim.

The indigo dye has been a contentious issue in recent times but not in this case. Denim is an all time classic and yes, it deserves all the praises, we wear this most of the times ( I wear mine all week through). For denim you don’t necessarily need many pieces, just a lighter and darker pair and your good to go. Avoid recognizable pieces, ones with acid wash and tears-distressed, for these lack versatility.

Chinos should also feature in our wardrobes especially neutral colors such as khaki which could blend with any outfit.

T-shirts and Polo shirts  are timeless pieces. These are highly affordable and so, the more the merrier. Multicolored to diversify your look but neutral colors; whites, camels, jungle greens and blacks, are a must have and remember plain or with minimal prints.

Accessorize! Our book carriers, our belts, wrists and layers if you may, have to be in-style. We’d all love our wrists shinier and icy but budgets, remember, yet again style. My wrist would always rock  some bead work and a minimal watch such as these time pieces from Timex which have the advantage of interchangeable straps and are affordable.

Belts would also be a necessity for a gent and no belt beats the woven belt, period!

Carriers are also contentious. Messenger bags are preferable by most style gurus arguing that backpacks are for high school. I partly agree because messenger bags are stylish but a good one, leather, is expensive. I believe backpacks are still crucial in our running because we tend to carry more than usual but all the same these two are winners.

Ooh! Before I forget, penny loafers. These are for the  days you feel dressier. These would naturally stand out from everyone else wearing kicks.Remember to switch it up a little with a nice dress shirt like these from Sproos.
